POINSETT COUNTY SHERIFF, LARRY K. MILLS
|

Poinsett County Sheriff & Collector, Larry K. Mills, is currently
serving his sixth term in office. Sheriff Mills was elected
to office in 1996 and began serving in January, 1997. Sheriff
Mills continues to work on the goals he has set forth and
polish the programs he has initiated since his election to
office.
Drugs remain the top priority and the Poinsett County Sheriff’s
Office will continue to hammer drug dealers and methamphetamine
manufacturers. A reduction in drug offenses results in less
general crime, as they are closely related.

Sheriff Mills cites many of the accomplishments of the Sheriff’s Office
during his tenure as follows:

Maintaining revenue in Poinsett County by purchasing
locally when feasible and possible |
|
|
Initiated early intervention drug education programs
in all of the Poinsett County Schools through the adoption of
the D.A.R.E. program. |
|
|
Produced revenue through the housing of inmates
from other agencies and collecting money from inmates for medical,
dental, nursing and medications. |
|
|
Increase in drug arrests and felony cases and
destroyed numerous clandestine methamphetamine laboratories.
|
|
|
Developed and maintained a sound working relationship
with all law enforcement agencies at the local, state, and federal
levels. |
|
|
Formed a Poinsett County Sheriff’s Search and
Rescue Team, made up of over forty volunteers with numerous
resources. |
|
|
Purchased needed law enforcement equipment for
the deputies with drug money forfeitures and grant opportunities.
|
|
|
Secured numerous grants including a recent grant
to enhance our current 911 system to better handle wireless
calls. |
|
|
Provided advanced training and continuing education
opportunities for the deputies, dispatchers and detention officers.
|
|
|
Initiated a Sheriff’s Inmate Work Program, transporting
selected inmates to our communities for work on public projects. |
|
|
Established Neighborhood Watch Programs in an
effort to reduce crime in Poinsett County. |
|
|
Conducted an Internal and External Survey to provide
the highest level of service to the citizens of the county. |
Sheriff Mills states that he represents Poinsett County in a positive
and professional manner. He is active in the Arkansas Sheriffs’
Association, where he currently serves as past President. He has
previously served on the Board of Directors and the Executive Board
of Directors as Finance Chairman. Sheriff Mills also serves on the
Second Judicial Drug Task Force Board of Directors, 1st Vice-President
of Arkansas Sheriffs' Youth Ranch, Association of AR Counties Legislative
Committee, Consolidated Youth Services Advisory Board and is a past
president of the East Arkansas Peace Officers’ Association. His
wife, Martha, is a past president of the Arkansas Sheriffs’ Wives
Association.
Sheriff Mills credits the success of his department to an excellent
staff and believes in leadership, vs. management. Making leaders
out of followers is the key to success, the days of management no
longer exist, you must lead by example. We will continue to protect
and serve the citizens of Poinsett County by providing the highest
level of dedication, diligence and professionalism. Our citizens
deserve it. We have an open door policy at the Poinsett County Sheriff’s
Office and we welcome your input as citizens of our community.
Sheriff Mills is currently in his 26th year as a law enforcement
officer. Fifteen of those years in an administrative capacity, having
previously served as Chief of Police in Harrisburg. Sheriff Mills
is a U.S. Navy veteran, graduated from Harrisburg High School in
1977 and attended Black River Technical College. He and his wife,
Martha, have two children, four grandchildren and are members of
the First Baptist Church in Harrisburg.
