Shooting in Tulot Outside of Trumann

A one million dollar cash bond was set on Wheeler and Halfacre by Judge Ron Hunter today.

Tony Wayne Wheeler, 47, of Trumann was arrested around 4:15 pm for his involvement in this incident. He is charged with Battery in the 1st Degree and Felon in Possession of a Firearm.

On Tuesday, October 2, 2018 at approximately 5:30 a.m., Trumann Police Department notified the Poinsett County Dispatch Center that Michael Craig Ervin, 44, of Trumann was at the Trumann Fire Department with a gunshot wound. The victim was transported to the fire department from a residence on Tulot Road outside of Trumann, AR. The shooting took place at the residence on Tulot Road. The victim was transported to the hospital where he is being treated for his wounds.

Upon arrival, the shooter was identified as Steven Edward Halfacre, 44, of Trumann. Investigators and deputies from the Poinsett County Sheriff’s Office and officers from the Trumann Police Department, Arkansas State Police, and Arkansas Highway Police immediately began searching for the suspect. At approximately 7:18 a.m., a tip from a citizen in the community notified law enforcement that a person matching Halfacre’s description was walking on Cash Road. Deputies and Officers saturated the area and found Halfacre on Odell Lane off of Cash Road. He was taken in to custody without incident at approximately 7:22 a.m.

Investigators have been interviewing witnesses and processing evidence since the shooting. One person was taken in to custody, but released earlier this morning. More arrests related to this incident are possible.

Steven Edward Halfacre, 44, of Trumann is currently charged with Battery 1, Felon in Possession of a Firearm, and Aggravated Residential Burglary.

The sheriff’s office is very appreciative of the assistance we received from the agencies listed above. A special thanks to Kait and Michael Steele at The Wolf for disseminating the information on the suspect so quickly to the public. We are also thankful for the citizen who gave the tip and for the dispatchers from Poinsett County and Trumann who worked so hard communicating the information to law enforcement and EMS. The coordinated effort from all led to the quick capture of Halfacre.
